Abstract
Participaram do estudo 100 voluntários divididos em cinco grupos: (1) Controle; (2) OA Ahlback I e II (OA-1/2); (3) OA Ahlback IV (OA-4); (4) ATJ 6 meses (ATJ-6) e (5) ATJ 12 meses (ATJ-12).
Objective: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease characterized by chronic articular cartilage degeneration and pain; have a worldwide coverage reaching millions of patients. Once the conservative approaches exhausted the total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is the surgical intervention recommended for OA treatment. Muscle atrophy, weakness and neuromuscular activation deficits are observed in parallel with degenerative processes of OA and also in patients undergoing TKA. However, little is found in the literature specifically regarding the muscle strength in the different stages of the disease. The aim of this study was to measure and compare, in a cross-section design, the maximum isokinetic muscle strength of the quadriceps (QUA) and hamstrings (HAM) in patients with OA and after TKA in different stages of the disease. The study included 100 volunteers divided into five groups (n = 20): (1) Control; (2) OA Ahlback I and II (OA-1/2); (3) OA Ahlback IV (OA-4); (4) TKA 6 months (TKA-6) and (5) TKA 12 months (TKA-12). The peak torque measured values for QUA were (mean ± SD): 1.11 ± 0.47; 0.99 ± 0.49; 0.56 ± 0.22; 0.54 ± 0.24; 0.65 ± 0.29 Nm.kg-1 and for HAM: 0.76 ± 0.29; 0.71 ± 0.33; 0.42 ± 0.16; 0.51 ± 0.19; 0.55 ± 0.20 Nm.kg-1 ; respectively for aforementioned groups. Significantly different values in QUA and HAM peak torque were found (p <0.001) between groups. OA-4, TKA-6 and TKA-12 groups having demonstrated lower values compare to Control and OA-1/2 groups. When percentually compared to Control group, mean differences values range between 7-41%. We concluded that there is a significant reduction in QUA and HAM muscle strength in patients with OA that remain even after TKA.
